Call for Applications: Interdisciplinary Japanese Studies Conference, 3-7 March, Norwich

Thanks to the generous support of the Toshiba International Foundation, the Centre for Japanese Studies at the University of East Anglia is delighted to announce a week-long in-person residential conference aimed at advanced undergraduate and masters level students and those considering postgraduate studies in Japan-related fields, from 3-7 March 2025. The conference will take place in at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. Full bursaries are available for travel, accommodation, subsistence and all conference-related costs. Please note that successful participants will need to cover their travel costs in the first instance to then be reimbursed.

Applications comprising a CV (1 page – including name, contact details, educational background and current affiliation), a 300-word statement on your interest in Japan and why you should be considered for a bursary, and an indication of anticipated return travel costs to Norwich should be sent to cjs@uea.ac.uk to arrive no later than midnight GMT on Sunday 2 February. It is expected that successful applicants will be informed by 7 February. Applications are welcomed from anywhere, and in particular from students in central and eastern Europe.

Participants will be expected to contribute a 10-minute presentation on a Japan-related research theme of their choice, and to take part in seminar-style discussions of each of the presentations. The conference language will be English and applicants should have sufficient English-ability to engage fully in the discussions.

Sessions will be led by members of the Centre for Japanese Studies at the University of East Anglia, whose areas of expertise include Japanese literature, history, politics and international relations, art history, cultural heritage and archaeology, along with some external speakers with expertise in public diplomacy and business. The conference will include a day in London visiting some of the major Japan-related institutions there.
